In general, for pastel and medium shades, you may prefer to use the special fixer - for deep shades, the addition of vinegar will  help promote  complete exhaustion of the dye onto the fabric

(i.e. water goes clear).

Before you begin:

Pre-wash fabric to be dyed in hot water and detergent - rinse thoroughly and leave damp - this process will remove manufacturers finishes - a water softener e.g. Calgon may be added in hard water areas to assist cleaning.

Method:

In a separate container, weigh and pre-mix the dye with very hot water until fully dissolved.

Fill a metal container (dye bath) with enough hot water to allow fabric to move freely .

Add pre-mixed dye, wet fabric and required amount of fixer/white vinegar.

Bring to boil and simmer for 20 minutes stirring occasionally.

To finish, remove from dye bath.  Wash in soap and warm water.
